My Journey into No-Code

Posted on July 9, 2025July 10, 2025

With all the buzz around no-code and low-code, I decided it was time to dive in and see what the hype was about. As someone who’s always been curious about building apps but intimidated by traditional coding, and frankly limited as a non-coder, I thought these platforms might be just what an English Lit graduate like me would need. Here’s my story of testing popular platforms: Base44 and Bolt.ai.

Diving Into AI App Generation

My first stop was Base44, and it was truly impressive. It was incredible to describe in a few sentences what I was looking for and immediately see something materialise within a few moments. The speed was incredible. What struck me most was how it understood my requirements in plain English. I didn’t need to know any technical jargon; I typed “I need a product management app that supports me during the whole product life cycle and works as a product assistant,” and Base44 delivered.

The Challenges I Faced

1. The Learning Curve Paradox

Despite the “no-code” label, you’re not escaping the need to learn. Every platform comes with its own logic, its own peculiar workflows, and its own set of conventions you’ll need to master.

2. Customisation Limitations

As a free user, you quickly discover the boundaries of customisation. Without a paid plan, there’s a ceiling on how distinctive and original you can make your product appear.

3. Cost Considerations

Token limits and access restrictions on the free tier often become obstacles right when you’re getting started, and you’re figuring out how everything works. The pricing structure isn’t always straightforward to understand when you’re still in the experimental phase of learning the platform.

The Highlights That Made It Worth It

1. Speed of Development

What would have taken weeks with traditional development happened in hours.

2. Professional Results

Despite being “no-code,” the output felt professional, featuring clean and modern design that is easy to set up.

3. Learning Opportunities

These platforms became unexpected teachers, transforming my relationship with technology. They dismantled my intimidation around AI and web development and replacing fear with curiosity and capability.

My Verdict

The no-code revolution is real, but it’s not magic. These platforms dramatically lower the barrier to entry for app development, but they don’t eliminate the need for logical thinking and design sense.

What impressed me most was how these tools democratise software creation. I built things I never thought possible without years of coding experience. Yes, there were frustrations and limitations such as AI misunderstandings, customisation limits, and unexpected costs but the ability to bring ideas to life so quickly overshadowed these challenges.
